In an industry with a much-maligned environmental record, Novinda prides itself on providing products and services that reduce the environmental impacts of coal burning power plants and boilers. For the present and near future, it is clear that coal will continue to be a primary fuel in the generation of electricity for our cities and towns, and for numerous industries throughout the country. Novinda’s products and services are, and will be, instrumental in reducing the potentially harmful impacts of coal use in energy production.

Novinda’s Products & Services:

  • Offer a significantly smaller carbon footprint than PAC, generating just 10% the CO2 in the course of production as carbon-based mercury capture agents
  • Are nonflammable and the mercury compounds that are generated are non-corrosive. Combined, these features limit potentially expensive damage to plant equipment and operations
  • Create an inert and insoluble solid reaction product, which will not leach mercury into area groundwater when stored
  • Result in useable gypsum, which can be sold for use in wall board products; and result in useable fly ash, which can be sold for concrete production instead of placed in landfills

Safe Storage & Handling

Other properties of mercury sorbents can be important in their full-scale deployment in operating power plants. Novinda has continued to perform lab tests to document properties of our products with respect to several important criteria. For example, in a test completed in fall 2013, AS-HgX was shown to be non-explosible, with a Kst of zero. Significantly, that means there are no potential concerns with fire or explosion with the use, storage, and transport of HgX.


Novinda has also recently completed Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP, EPA Method 1311) tests of Amended Silicates captured along with fly ash in a full-scale CS-ESP. The samples easily passed the standard for leachable mercury, with a measured mercury level of just a few parts per billion in the leachate, significantly less than the EPA TCLP mercury standard for this Method of 200 ppb. Additional leaching tests have been run over a range of pH values following the new EPA Method 1313 as well. These tests also confirmed that mercury remains sequestered in the Novinda sorbent/fly ash mixture over a range of pH from 7.7 to 13. In such tests, mercury was non-detectible or less than one part per billion, providing further evidence that the mercury captured by the Novinda product will remain captured, even in fly ash that may be sluiced to a storage pond at the utility plant.
